Happy Wednesday friends! So I know we’ve all heard about drinking warm water with lemon before. It’s nothing new, but I just began doing it 3 weeks ago and have been loving the amazing benefits!
Recently in late January/early February, I would wake up super groggy after a full night’s sleep, crave a nap around 2pm, and overall had low energy. I knew something was off. To make sense of everything, I started reading more about Ayurveda. After multiple quizzes (this one is my favorite) to determine my dosha, I learned that I was a kapha – and an imbalanced one at that. This post won’t be focused on Ayurveda because I’m just learning myself but there are tons of resources out there. To put simply, Ayurveda is an ancient medical system with roots in India that focuses on a powerful mind and body connection so that humans can live their fullest potential. If that interests you, look more into it and you may have many ‘aha’ moments like I did myself 🙂
Ayurveda encourages everyone to start their day with a cup of warm water with lemon. It’s known to be beneficial mostly for two reasons. First, the warm water stimulates our gastrointestinal tract to keep things moving. Second, lemons are rich in minerals and properties that help soften the amas, or toxins, in our digestive tract.
I now wake up every morning craving the feeling of warm and refreshing lemon water hitting my stomach. It’s so comforting! It’s kinda like the feeling of your first sip of coffee – but better 🙊
Here are 4 benefits I’ve personally experienced these past weeks –
Improves Skin – My skin has been more calm and less agitated. I don’t have random small breakouts or hives like I would occasionally get. I wouldn’t say my skin is suddenly radiant since drinking this, but it’s been pretty clear from acne and pores for the past month!
Aids Digestion – I feel like it has helped rev up my metabolism so I’m digesting my meals better, especially breakfast and lunch. As a kapha, my digestion is naturally pretty slow so this has been a big help. I’ll usually have 1 or 2 cups before eating any breakfast and then another cup after lunch.
Cuts Cravings – I have a major sweet tooth and I’m always reaching for things like dark chocolate peanut butter cups or “health” bars that are mostly made of chocolate chips and dates, so the pungent and astringent taste of lemons helps suppress that craving!
Induces Bowel Movement – No explanation needed.
All I do is use my electric kettle (on the lowest setting) to warm up my water then squeeze in 1/4 of a lemon and enjoy! I think this will continue to be a staple in my morning routine. Do you guys do this regularly and if so, what benefits have you seen? Hope you all have an amazing finish to the week 💕
